A War in Ten Poems

From Cholsey Downs to Flanders Fields – the Great War in the words of its greatest poets

Sunday, 2 November, in St Mary-le-More Parish Church, Wallingford.

Written by Peter Adamson (A Town Called Wallingford, Landmark in Time), A War in Ten Poems tells the story of changing attitudes to the Great War through the voices of its greatest poets.

Coming just ahead of Armistice Day 2025, the event is being held in aid of Brightwell Supporting Refugees.

The play opens on the Downs near Cholsey in the summer of 1914, where John Masefield has come to find a peaceful place in which to write. Over the course of the next hour, it tells the story of changing attitudes towards the Great War – in the words of Masefield, Brooke, McRae, Hodgson, Sassoon and Wilfred Owen.

The performance is directed by Christopher Baines.

Doors and bar (wine, beer, soft drinks) will be open from 6.45 pm and the performance will begin at 7.30 pm. Tickets (£10.00) are available from Wallingford Bookshop and Brightwell Village Stores. They can also be purchased at the door or online from the link below (all proceeds to Brightwell Supporting Refugees).
