Pelicans in San Francisco Bay

O do not call them ponderous, clumsy birds,

or think this heavy leather waddle is their all.

Admire, in lieu, pelagic elegance in those

now out to sea whose membranes tuck and stall,

and plummet down on quivering shoals,

punishing the bay with delicate plumes of spray.

The fishermen do not miss it, miles away.
